La prima ondata composta dal 2° e 5° btg Ranger e dal 121° e 146° Btg del genio il cui compito č aprire un varco nei campi minati ed eliminare gli ostacoli anticarro, si avvicina alla spiaggia. Nonostante l'intenso fuoco tedesco, le truppe Usa riescono a non disperdersi troppo e arrivano ad ondate successive sulla spiaggia.

La prima ondata inizia la sua lenta ma inesorabile avanzata verso le linee nemiche. I tedeschi sparano con tutte le armi a disposizione, l'artiglieria media e pesante procura gravi perdite agli americani. Unici a non subire perdite sono i Ranger del 2° Btg. che avanza deciso verso le trincee nemiche.


 

Il fuoco tedesco non riesce a fermare gli americani che, nonostante le perdite, assaltano le trincee nemiche.

I combattimenti sono accaniti, le truppe d'assalto americane riescono ad occupare quasi tutta la prima linea tedesca. Solo il WN66 resiste circondato da tre lati. Alcuni plotoni tedeschi posti a guardia delle trincee e del WN68 sono costrette a retrocedere sotto la pressione americana. Il 2° Ranger dilaga nella pianura retrostante la spiaggia. Il 5° Btg Ranger perde il proprio comando ed č costretto a fermare la propria avanzata per riorganizzarsi. Nel frattempo inizia a sbarcare il 1° Btg del 116 Rgt Usa.
